Weather

In general, the weather in Tone is cooler than the other areas of Gunma. The yearly average highs and lows are around 16C/60F and 6C/40F, but it is not uncommon to see highs of 34C in the summer and lows of -10C in the winter. As such, it is a good idea to be appropriately prepared when visiting this area.

  • Numata Station [Joetsu Line] (20min uphill walk to city center)
  • Minakami Station [Joetsu Line] (past Minakami station, IC cards cannot be used)
  • Jomokogen Station [Joetsu Shinkansen] (shinkansen only)

Train service is limited in Tone, with many attractions being only accessible by bus or car. Due to frequent heavy snowfall in winter, having winter tires on your car is highly recommended, if not necessary. In addition, accessing some rural mountain areas may require the use of chains.
