Taking the Japanese driving test this FridaySubmitted by ElvenShadow on Tue, 2008/03/18 - 14:48.
So I will be taking the test for my Japanese license this Friday. Im well aware of how often people tend to fail this so I was wondering if anyone on here who has already taken the test before might be able to offer some advice? |

First you must defeat the Swamp Lynch who lays
in the south and regain the power of the water crystal.
Then once the crystal shines it's light,
you bust travel to the cave in the western hills and
awaken the Myst dragon. From there head to the east and
speak to the ancient one. Lastly, Head to the North to
confront the Tyrant of Time... that should just about do it.
Seriously,
Two hands on the wheel. When you turn left, look over you left
shoulder as if there could be a bike coming. On the straight away when you have to hit 50Kmph, make sure when slowing down
you break 3 times (1......2......3.....)
Oh and when you pull out in the beginning of the test use
your blinker.
Luckly the person before you does the test well. So you can see what to do first hand.
Good luck!!!
Driving and You
Scott put up loads of information and advice on gunmajet last year and I believe it's still current.
He had included a map and a step-by-step instruction set, diagrammed and all, in the Gunma Orientation book. It may be included in one of the following posts too.
Check out the links.

mirrors, mirrors of the car
1st: there should be a practice course that is almost an exact replica of the test course nearby. it costs money to use the course, but it is highly recommended, especially as
the instructor will give you pointers. consider it something like "studying" for your driver's test.
2nd: check your mirrors (rear and side) like someone is out to get you (aka obsessively.) this shows that you are "aware" of the imaginary cyclists and other vehicles.
Oh, just fyi: you can choose which type of
license you test for (aka a license that allows you to drive both standard and automatic trans. vehicles OR just automatic. You'll be tested using a standard trnas. vehicle if you choose the former license type.
Good luck, but methinks you'll be fine.
Practice Test!
If you fail this time, please go take the practice test in Takasaki. There is a little old woman who is very helpful and she will prepare you. Since they are not actually testing your driving ability, but instead testing if you can do exactly what they want at exactly the right time, then the practice session is invaluable!

thanks, that was a big help,
thanks, that was a big help, now I just need to memorize the whole procedure :P
yea so uh... I failed the
yea so uh... I failed the test. 20 foreigners took the test and only 5 passed. No one who took it their first time that day passed. One guy told me it was his 17th try and he still didnt pass.
I think my problem was that I was looking around TOO much. Everyone stressed to constantly check mirrors and around your shoulder. The instructor in the car told me that it was dangerous because I wasnt looking straight ahead enough...
The course was also different than the map I studied, I guess they change it from time to time.
Since they have very specific rules and pretty odd criteria I was wondring, in a situation where you are turning right into a 2 lane road, do they want you to turn into the right lane or the left lane? I think its pretty rediculous that id even need to ask that question but you can never tell with this test...
im taking it again in a month, hopefully i can pass it on my 2nd try
Practice Driving School!
Trust me: go to the practice school in Takasaki. It's about a 15 minute walk from Takasaki Station, about a 5 minute drive. I can't seem to find the infor for the school, but someone else may have it. At any rate, it will help and they will show you exactly what they expect you to do for the test.

is the practice school open on weekends? I dont really want to (or know if I can) take a nenkyuu just to go to it, also, if anyone could post more specific info about it that would rock
Yes, open on weekends
Yes, it's open on weekends. I went on a Saturday. They might not be open on Sundays, though.

Alternating Saturdays
I believe the Takasaki school opens on alternating Saturdays (or was it alternating Sundays?). I don't have their card any longer but doesn't hurt to check it out in person just in case...unless it costs a bunch of yennies to get to Takasaki.
Go to the school
The school is basically a buss under a bridge. I walked there from the station. Head out of the (West?) exit and walk straight down past the city hall. Make a left at big intersection. You will know if you are on the right road if you pass a monistary on your left. Keep going straight and you will see a bi bridge. Cross the bridge and go down the left sideof it and you will see the course and stuff.
Sorry, that's the best I can remember it. Good luck!
Don't go in bad weather.
And if it's pissing it down with rain, don't go. Because it will be closed.
I will take a check around and see if I can dig up the info from somewhere.

Anyone know if you need an
Anyone know if you need an appointment for the practice center? Or can you just show up? And do they speak English at the practice center? My Japanese isn't great.
not really
The place I went to (Shibukawa/Akagi) didn't require an appointment. Although I had to wait for a while before an instructor was free. I'm not sure about other places though, if its super busy all the time, I'm sure you might need one. Depends on the place I suppose, the one I went to was pretty empty.
No one spoke English however, so it might be a good idea to bring a translator along or something.
