New in Maebashi (and Japan)Submitted by Texan_In_Japan on Sat, 2008/04/19 - 15:36.
Hey guys, I'm Dean. I stumbled across this site a couple days ago and think it's great! I moved to Maebashi from America a couple of weeks ago, and as of yet I know no one. Now that my initial culture shock has worn off and I'm finally getting settled, I'd like to meet some people to socialize with. It seems there's a nice group of folks here. I'm teaching English at a small private school (I'm the only teacher, actually), and since most of my students are kiddies my social circle is (surprise) very small. I want to check out the Maebashi area (of course), and I'm all about biking and hiking, so if you'd like to grab a bite to eat, have a drink or just hang out shoot me a message. You can reach me by email or hit me up on myspace or facebook. Take it easy, Dean |

Welcome to Gunma!
Hi Dean,
My name is Sean, and I'm based in Agatsuma, outside of Maebashi, about an hour away. However, I wanted to let you know that if you keep an eye on the events calendar, there are many events and opportunities to meet others, and you don't necessarily have to be a JET. Recently, Maebashi and Takasaki are hiring from private companies, but I hope many of them also look at this site too. Don't be afraid to post any questions about the events, or to sign-up.
Looking forward to meeting you...

Hey,
群馬へようこそ
Do you play soccer?
Welcome
Whatever happens... happens.
Haha! Phil, that was a nice introduction of self interest! Are you going to try and recruit girl players as well?
Welcome to the heart of Japan! We sometimes meet up in Kaiyaki Walk for movies or just hang-out time.
haha my bad.
haha
my bad.
:) It's cool
Whatever happens... happens.
Like Sean said - GAJET is a good place to look up events where all sorts of English-interested people make plans. There is an upcoming soccer tournament in June - which is what Phil was talking about.
I'm me... based in Shibukawa. Probably see you around sometime!
Hajimemashite!
Nice to have another gaijin in the crew - welcome to Gunma, Dean! Sounds like we've got alot of the same interestes, I became mildly obsessed with hiking last fall and am already jonesin' to get out some more! The bike paths in Maebashi aer wonderful along the rivers and the weather is FINALLY shaping up, so you couldn't have come at a better time. There are some great restaurants in Maebashi and Takasaki (neighboring town, 10 minute train ride away), and of course Tokyo is only an hour shinkansen (bullet train, twice the price) or 2 hour regular train ride away. My sister is coming in for a visit this Friday and staying for 11 days, but I'd love to meet up with ya some time after that! Or, if you're feeling ambitious you're more than welcome to join us in Tokyo (doing the touristy thang with her). My e-mail addy is smoersfelder@gmail.com - don't hesitate to drop a line and ask any mundane or serious or ridiculous question... I had a million and one when I first came here, and didn't / still don't speak a lick of Japanese.
Until we meet (is that creepy or what?),
Sarah
PS - I highly recommend biking your ass around as much as possible, just to get to know the area. Swing by the amazing new flower park while you're at it - it's absolutely gorgeous now. It's directly north of the Kencho (prefectural government building, if you know where that is), east of the Tone River, and south of the Green Dome. Hope that helps!
Welcome to Maebashi!
Dean,
Maebashi is a great place to live! I've been here 3 years and loved it. If you haven't already, try joining the GAJET group on yahoo. You'll be able to get a lot more information if you're on the list serve.
