setting up xbox live

sorry for making another thread about this, but i figure i'd get more responses with a separate thread.

so yesterday i got myself an xbox and GTA4 and i was trying to hook up to xbox live but my xbox was telling me it couldnt detect my IP address.

my xbox and laptop are literally a foot away from each other so i dont really feel the need to go out and buy a router. simply switching the cable between the two isnt a problem for me, but i'm guessing there is more to it then this and that it may in fact be part of the problem since xbox live isnt working for me.

also, i only know the very basics when it comes to computers and networking. could anyone walk me through it? is it merely just a matter of power cycling the modem when switching the cable between the xbox and laptop? (i didnt immediately think of doing that, but i'll try it when i get home)

I would advise that you call

I would advise that you call the Xbox Live technical support service with your problem; a quick google search should find their number. I've had a few troubles with Live in the past and in my experience, they've always been helpful and experienced.

er

I've never had to deal with xbox live technical support, but it seems like your problem probably isn't that complicated.

I would try power-cycling the modem, that may solve the problem... but is so lame if you're going to be switching in and out with any frequency.
The optimal solution really would be a router, or at least a hub or switch.

If you're adamant about cable swapping I would use a static IP address for your xbox. I think what you're seeing is your xbox complaining that it's expecting to be assigned an address by your modem, and just isn't getting one. For the sake of ease, we'll use the address that your computer is currently using (since they'll never be connected at the same time, this won't ever be a problem).

The first step is to determine a few pieces of information from your computer (IP address, subnet and gateway [or router, as it's being called more and more often]).

I'm assuming you're in Windows, and you're currently plugged in.
- Click start
- Go to Run
- enter 'cmd' and hit okay. You'll be greeted with the ever so friendly command line prompt.
- type 'ipconfig /all' and observe the explosion of information
- under the heading Ethernet adapter Local Area Connection you'll see fields for IP Address, Subnet Mask and Default Gateway. Copy these down.
Your IP will probably be something like 192.168.x.x, subnet 255.255.255.0 and gateway 192.168.x.1

On your Xbox
- Move to the System area.
- Select Network Settings.
- Select Edit Settings.
- Select IP Settings.
- Select Manual.
- Enter the information you just got from your computer into the appropriate fields.

Plug your cable in your xbox and profit.

I would imagine that would work, unless something is totally weird.

wow! thank you for the

wow! thank you for the detailed response lyle.
i actually figured out that the main problem was that i needed to input into the xbox a username and a password that my internet supplier gave to me many months ago. and now it works great.

but if i ever have any further troubles now i know who to contact!
