Tokyo Marathon 2009 - 3.22

Is anyone interested in running Tokyo Marathon (with me)?
This'll be my first full marathon, so I'm really gunning to finish, not to break any records. That isn't to say I haven't run anything at all though. I ran the half at the Annaka Samurai Marathon this year, and am quite confident that in the next 6 months I'll be ready for the full.

There isn't guaranteed registration, but the application season has started and will last until September 22nd.
If you register now we'll have nearly 7 months to train!

Let's run!

Even if you don't want to run with me, let me know if you register! We can at least sport some Gunma pride!

(BTW: Even if you're not looking for a full marathon, there are lots of other fun local events throughout the year... hit me up. I'll let you know what I know)

Running's my middle name

Hey Lyle,
I am most definitely interested. Annaka Samurai marathon was awesome and actually wasn't nearly as difficult to train for or complete as I thought. I feel kinda weak house saying I've done a marathon, but then having to clarify that it wasn't exactly a FULL marathon, only half... so, I'd really like to try to do a full marathon as well. No time like the present, ne? And I might as well do it alongside half the world's population!
I'll check out the costs and look into some training programs and figure out whether or not it is possible to hack out the long runs in the middle of Gunma's harsh winters, but I really do wanna try this. The Annaka Marathon was perfect timing weather wise b/c training outdoors was really enjoyable and I could manage the "long runs" once a week without such a busy schedule near the end of winter. I'll try to sort it all out soon. Are there better chances of ensuring a spot by registering earlier?

yeah!

It should be interesting training in the winter, but I ran all last winter and it wasn't so bad. I did have to adopt a bit of a Rocky type outfit that included a sweatshirt, windbreaker and gloves. But it was manageable, and running in the snow was rather beautiful in the early morning.

There doesn't appear to be any advantage to registering early IF they fill up. If they don't fill up then the advantage to registering early is that you've already registered.

In any case, at this time the pre-registration is free. The actual race cost is 12,000. A bit steep, but if you start saving now...

join me in Nagano!

I plan to run the Nagano Marathon in mid April 2009, would be fun to do it w. other people from Gunma. Will be my 1st marathon in 6 yrs, so I'm basically a 1st timer too. I've volunteered w. Nagano since 2003 & have a bias towards it, admittedly. Great course (flat! wraps around several Olympic stadiums, finishing in the opening/closing ceremony stadium is spectacular, thousands of fans along the course, cherry blossoms & snowcapped mountains on the horizon), very well organized, friendly, registration about Y6,000, can register in Dec., sometimes later for foreigners. 1/2 my web site is devoted to the event. The site needs a bit of updating but is still 95% accurate.

Tokyo Marathon - my volunteer in Nagano worked w. the Tokyo marathon in 07 & said organization was horrible in many areas; it snowed on race day, too. High registration, early signup deadline, running elbow-to-elbow in the huge pack of runners & more. For a first marathon, I'd say Nagano is definitely better, but again I'm biased ;-)

Anyone in the Hash House Harriers? email me - on on!

Nagano Marathon

The 2009 Nagano Marathon will be on Sunday, April 19. I'm running, would be fun to do it w. other people from Gunma. I usually volunteer @ the start & finish lines, but since I'll be running, the event staff would really appreciate another foreigner volunteer for those places. Post here or let me know if you're interested. Thanks!

Woot! Woot!

Time to bust out the running shoes, the forgotten notions of gaman, the willpower, the discipline, and the intimidated knees. Wait a minute, this is nuts. I hope that I can find all this stuff in my closet.

I looked. I found the shoes....
