Not sure about Gunma but I
Not sure about Gunma but I know Kinokuniya in Shinjuku, Tokyo has an entire floor of english translated manga as well as many other books in English (fiction/non-fiction etc.) It's behind the Takashimaya department store that is right next to Shinjuku station. Take the south exit or you can go out the east exit, turn right and follow the road towards it. Can't miss it.
i just talked with one of my
i just talked with one of my students who gets translated manga from amazon.
There is Maruzen Bookstore
There is Maruzen Bookstore across the street from the North Marunouchi exit at Tokyo Station. They have a entire floor for English books, including translated manga and Lonely Planets (for those who are interested).
Also, there is a comicbook store that sells comics and collectibles from North America in Shibuya. I forget the name of it, but if you go to the GAP, walk across the street, and then down the slope a little bit, You can see some figures in the window.
there is a kinokunya in maebashi
Keyaki Walk, they have a SMALL selection of English Manga. Don't go in expecting to find all of Berserk, but they might have a volume or two. I've never looked all that carefully.
I'd say Amazon.co.jp is your best bet, and if you order enough shipping is free! (and fast. I love amazon.jp so much)
You can get em' but...
All those places everyone mentioned have them: the book stores at Aeon Takasaki, and Keyaki Walk in Maebashi. I think even the Bookmans Academy in Maebashi. Like Lyle said though, they have a decent selection but it's not like wall to wall like Family Book for the Japanese comics. But beware, they are really expensive!!! They're like 1500-1700yen a pop! I think the regular Japanese manga are something like 300-700 tops. Factor in if theres like 10-20 in a series. You're making an investment. I'm not sure but I heard that it's actually American or western companies that do the translating, so the manga is actually printed and shipped from overseas to get to Japan, therefore the higher prices. Good Luck
Comic Baby, Comics
If you're looking for American comics and don't mind collections the easiest way is to use Amazon.co.jp. Quick, easy and you can do COD for only a small fee. I think about ¥200.
The place in Shibuya is called Blister. It is about one block before the Shibuya Apple Store and across the street from a large Disney Store.
If any one ever wants to geek out by talking about US comics, give me a call.
