Furikomi Inquiry

Hey everybody,

I'd like to send money back to the states and am curious to see if any of you know if Gunma Bank has a limit or other restrictions on the amount one can furikomi each time. Thanks.

Not aware of one. Website

Not aware of one. Website furikomi page doesn't mention a limit on transfer amounts. Call the bank to confirm, or just try it and see if it goes through.

Limit

¥500,000 is the limit per transfer I think. I'm not entirely sure of the exact amount since I've never sent that much, but there is definitely a limit.

no limit

As far as I know there is no limit for furikomi. I have sent over 1 mil yen at a time and there are plenty of horror stories about old folks who've been tricked into furikomi-ing away their life's savings.

I assume you mean that you'll be sending the furikomi to llyod's and not directly to your home bank account though? I'm not sure how it works otherwise.

are there any canadians with

are there any canadians with BMO?
I was told that on top of the 2000 yen i have to pay goloydds, there's a $14 incoming wire transfer charge

is goloydds a wire service?

¥2000 to GoLloyds $15 for

¥2000 to GoLloyds
$15 for CIBC since it's the intermediary bank between GoLloyds and BMO
$14 or whatever BMO charges you for the wire transfer

Yes, it's a Wire Service. I'm RBC not BMO, but it's pretty much standardized across all banks in Canada.

thanks for the info.. looks

thanks for the info..
looks like my pcf account will only charge me the 15 since they're a subsidiary of cibc, but now i have to link another account = another week or 2 :(

furikomi limit

Fitz,
There is limit on each transaction that varys depending on whether the money comes directly from your bank account of if you fund it by cash, and overall there was a 2 million yen per day limit the last time I checked.

Kisaten,
Yes, golloyds is a wire transfer service so fees on your home bank end will apply. In total a golloyds transfer should cost about 4000 yen if you combine all the transaction fees.

sending money home

Y4,000 sounds average for sending money thru Lloyds; it cost me a lot more to send it to my smalltown bank in the States, though, something w. the small bank I think. Correct me if I'm wrong here, but: Lloyds fee: Y2,000. Gunma Bank furikomi fee: about Y500. My smalltown bank took $10 for themselves, & middlemen somewhere & unknown took chunks for themselves. Total cost for me to send money home: $60+! Last time I went home, I asked bank staff if I could send travelers checks directly to the bank & have them deposited to my account; they said it'd work, & I should write "For Deposit Only" & the bank's name on the "Pay to the order of" line. I've sent travelers checks home every month for over a year, no problems. Cost: Gunma Bank charges 2% of the travelers check amount or so; & a postage stamp. Takes time to go to the bank, sign the checks, wait a week or so for them to be deposited, but doing that saves me $40 per transaction. Check with your own bank to see if they'll let you do this.

If the middlemen & my hometown bank had lower fees on wire transactions, I'd do that rather than the travelers checks though.
