Pool SafetySubmitted by Lupin3 on Thu, 2007/08/09 - 11:32.
For those that swim in their school pools. I have just overheard a conversation between my elementary school nurse (in charge of monitoring the pool) and the board of education I feel I should issue a warning to all teachers at Gunma schools. It seems Kiryu board of education are cutting corners on their schools pool PH monitoring and chlorine addition because of expense. It may be that other boards of education do or don't take such a light view of their childrens safety. My school nurse was just told to monitor pool water PH level once a day instead of the twice a day as it should be. She was also told that Chlorine additive had run out and that they would have to "do without for the moment" A number of my teachers including my Principal expressed that they thought that this was dangerous. In my opinion: At the current high ambient temperature and humidity this may lead to a high concentration of dangerous bacteria in pool water. The lack of PH monitoring will also lead to an inability to foresee mistakes in over addition of chlorine or high concentration due to water evaporation. High concentration of chlorine in swimming water is highly dangerous and may lead to skin burning and eye damage and sickness if water is ingested. Regarding harmful bacteria. Always shower well using soap after swimming in the pool. If you experience burning symptoms due to chlorine rinse your eyes / self with water immediately. Please be aware that your school pool may not be as safe as you think. Chris Lane Kiryu B.O.E. Cutting costs at the expense of safety to children since 2007. |
