Attention Rock Stars

Welcome, new people, to Gunma, and hello to everyone staying on! By now I'm sure you all have heard about the 2 most amazing gajin bands in Gunma; Nikujaga (http://www.myspace.com/nikujaga) and Nekolove(http://www.myspace.com/nekoloveinjapan). Get excited, we'll post upcoming shows that you will not want to miss (unless you don't like fun, then you should probably stay at home with your cats)!

Anywhoo... The purpose here is not shameless self-promotion, but, I thought it would be kind of a good idea to see what kind of talent we have here in Gunma as far as Rock Stardom goes.

If you play music, rock, jazz, blues, electronic, DJ, or whatever, go ahead and tell a little bit about yourself. Name, Location, what instrument(s) do you play, style you like/influences, and contact information (if you feel comfortable doing that), your favorite beer and your favorite movie, or whatever else you can think of.

"I PLAY A LITTLE BIT BUT I SUCK!"- Beginners, ability is not an issue! This is all in the name of fun! Even if you play a little bit, speak up, Gunma needs you! The Japasnese love to see/hear foriegn bands. No excuses!

"BUT I DON'T EVEN HAVE A GUITAR/INSTRUMENT/DRUMS/GEAR"- There are rehursal studios all over Gunma that are reasonably priced that have all the gear (amps, PA, etc) included in the studios (including drum kits) You can buy crappy guitars (that really arn't that bad) for 1-2 mon, medium grade stuff (epiphone, squire) for about 4-5 mon, and higher grade stuff (Fender, Gibson) 8-10 mon. And of course Hard Off has all kinds of used guitars and gear for cheep. Think about that cost compared to what it costs for one weekend partying in Tokyo. You can get a guitar for that much.

So, if you Rock (or soft rock, or jazz out, or like to spin the techno, or you are a concert triangle player), or, like Twisted Sister says, you Wanna Rock, throw down a post, and let's see if we can start up some new bands and see if we can make a little "scene" here in Gunma!

I make industrial music.

I make industrial music. The real kind, not that MTV "metal band with a drum machine" pap. I have played about 20 shows in Canada and the US. People who like normal friendly music about relationships and kittens and "ooh baby baby" are virtually guaranteed to dislike:

http://www.myspace.com/consume1

The only places in this entire country that have any industrial scene at all are Tokyo, Osaka, and Nagoya once or twice every geological epoch of time. I'd like to play a show somewhere, anywhere, for free, but I don't want to inflict my noise on an unprepared audience. Gave up trying to shock people when I was a teenager, I just do my own thing.

YO

I play Bass / Guitar / and Cello. I own 2 or the 3 and I am sure you know which one I don't have. I will play just about anything. However, to be honest I don't like doing cover songs but I will manage. I also make "beats" on my PC, nothing spectacular.

I have been in bands since I was 15. I played in
"Hard Core/Punk" bands since I was 15. Made a few CDs and have been on a "indie" record label. Nowadays who hasn't.

I also was an MC for a while when I first got here. We Preformed only twice but it was fun. So yeah I am good to Jam even start a band.

So yeah drop me a line. If you have some stuff of what you did please send me a link.

I used to play a little

I used to play a little guitar, and a lot of drums. I7m probably pretty rusty but if anyone who is in to more rock stuff and needs someone to keep a beat goin, let me know.

If your interested, we'd like you to come to a show to A) see if you like the band and B) hear what Adrian's doing and see if you have a similar style or if you're stlye will fit.

But he's leaving soon so if you're interested, it would be good to kinda see what we have going on now, before Adrian leaves.

Give me you're email or something.

Where are you based dear

Where are you based dear Sir? <p>And your moniker - a reference to High Llamas and Super Furries by any chance? Mighty fine choices :)

Ive played bass guitar since

Ive played bass guitar since about 6th grade and I used to be in a band with some friends back in Chicago. Though for the last few years I only have played a bit from time to time but I know some songs and can get by. I also ocassionaly like to mess around with some percussion stuff like bongos and whatnot. I mostly listen to and play various kinds of metal and classic rock. My favorite stuff is progressive metal like Symphony X and Dream Theater but I also like the classics like Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, and Black Sabbath. I dont have a bass in Minakami but maybe I will buy one later, I havnt decided yet.

Alt Rock Star

I started writing songs when I was 15 (14 years ago), then at University in Scotland I was in a band (I wrote the music and lyrics but just stuck to being lead guitarist) that got selected for the best unsigned talent in Scotland showcase. I then fired the rest of that band (lazy gits) and started doing a solo acoustic singer/songwriter thing and ended up headlining a night for Edinburgh Underground Acoustic. Then I decided I wanted to start rocking again and formed a three piece band with me singing and playing guitar. We got well recognized and made the Scottish Music News (NME for Scotland), described as Tool meets The Smashing Pumpkins with a dash of Placebo (I love weird timings and spacey wall of sound distortions!) But time was ticking and I'd always wanted to come to Japan, so I took a long working holiday (which upset my band) whilst still working on new songs which I'd love to bring life to with other like minded musos here in Japan. Along with AltRock I also love my Industrial, Cybergoth, Darkwave and Future Pop for those of you with synths and EBM nicnacs. If anything Industrial/CyberGoth/Whateverthehellthenewcoolkidsarecallingitthesedays doesn't appear to have touched Japan very much, which is a hole I'd love to fill if anyone wants to jump to that challenge? Have a listen to some of VNV Nation's newer stuff at http://www.vnvnation.de/downloads_sounds_judgement.php if you don't have a clue what I'm talking about. I know I've written alot but that's just because I'm darn keen to get something going! I'm based in Numata City.

There is a small but

There is a small but dedicated and thriving industrial and extreme noise scene in Japan. I go to concerts and events a couple times a month in Tokyo. Just played at the best industrial night in Japan last month with my own rhythmic noise project, actually. Here's the website, you should go:

www.midnightmess.com

The whole future pop, modern EBM thing is not big here at all. The biggest "goth" night in Japan, Tokyo Dark Castle, plays *some*, but honestly that event is more about Harajuku style costume posturing than music. If you like it a big rougher and, uh, real-er, then come to Mess and we will hook you up.

Brigg Sabol's picture

Anything in Gunma?

Is there anything like that in Gunma? Maebashi? Takasaki? perhaps?

consume's picture

Nothing at all. Like I

Nothing at all. Like I said, it is very, very underground here, and suffers from the added confusion of being misassociated with the Visual Kei scene because apparently them ripping off and glam-rocking up our clothes means there is some meaningful connection. Really, we're so close to the city that if you're serious about the music you love a two hour train ride shouldn't faze you. I've been doing just that about 3 times a month since I got here two years ago.

Do let me know if you want someone to show you where and when events are held. The scene here is...odd, but better than nothing. Certainly original.

Goth

"The biggest "goth" night in Japan, Tokyo Dark Castle, plays *some*, but honestly that event is more about Harajuku style costume posturing than music."

WHAT IS GOTH as far as music is concerned? Give me a definition. Because you imply that it is more than a bad fashion statement, and I've been trying to figure this out for years and to no avail. There are people that will claim, The Cure and Souxie and the Banshees are goth and then you have people who will claim that Marylin Manson and Cradle of Filth are goth. It seems to me that goth IS fashion or a certain look and has nothing to do with any musical style. You have metal, new wave, industrial, punk, The Dresden Dolls (whatever kind of music you want to call them).

From what I've gathered, I believe that any goth event would be costume postureing over music by nature.

Ready...set...GO!!!

Dresden Dolls

They are classified as Cabaret Punk.
And they usually have a group of people (dressed like gargoyles, gothic like ballerinas and clowns)standing around them like statues whenever they play.

I saw them open for NIN a few years ago and I have to say, they were actually pretty good.

Why are you asking me, I'm

Why are you asking me, I'm not even a spooky. I like industrial music, I could care less what the batrock kids pretend to listen to in between smoking cloves and touching up their makeup. Fact is you're basically right, true "goth music" has been, ahem, dead, for over ten years. Nowadays all that remains are a bunch of old crusties trying to relive the glory days and kids who saw some "dark scary shit" at Hot Topic but don't want to stop listening to metal. W-T-F-Ever, says I.

Brigg Sabol's picture

I asked you because you made

I asked you because you made the statement "but honestly that event is more about Harajuku style costume posturing than music." It sounds like you point out a difference between costume posturing and the music. Being that you recognized a difference, I assumed you have an understanding of both things mentioned.

I think Lana answered the question for me though.

And I liked the "goth is dead" line.

Goth Subculture

There are a lot more subsets of goth than most people realize. Both The Cure and Marilyn Manson could be classified as goth, but fans of the one are not necessarily fans of the other (and the fashion to go with them is not necessarily the same, either). The goth night in my college town used to play a lot of Depeche Mode and The Cure, but not so much industrial music. The gothic fashion subculture and different niches is even more fascinating.

I play the guitar and write...

Hi,

I`m Isesaki based musician - I previously wrote and played guitar for the band Arms of Cuba in the UK (www.armsofcuba.co.uk). I gave that up to follow ambitition and my g/f here to Japan and my intention/hope is to form a 3 piece group - I prefer the production/writing values/sounds of classic 60s/70s rock i.e tunes! but hope to merge that with more modern well written stuff - Pumpkins/Editors/Stellastar*. Heavy but not to heavy! As of yet I have not found anyone to fill the void so if you play drums or bass (or for that matter anything else) please get in touch. I`m quite serious about a future band and thus I must throw those old music add cliches of commitment/professional etc into this. I have a great many songs just waiting to go, if youre interested check out the my last bands website - these were the simple tunes I could get the band to play and gig with, newer stuff will be more complex but not prog rock or anything daft!

Thanks!
