Numata Festival - 沼田祭り

Location Date:
Aug. 3-5
Location Cost:
Free
Location Description:

The Numata Festival (沼田祭り Numata Matsuri) is the main festival for the Numata area. It takes place on August 3rd through 5th. The Numata Gion festival, which is said to be one of the best and most exciting festivals in northern Kanto, marks the beginning of the Numata festival.

Lots of floats (mando), each with its own festival music and decorations, are pulled around the town on every day of the festival.

A number of the communities in Numata also have their own portable floats (mikoshi) which are brought out for the festival (Aug 3rd & 4th). Some of the local shrines have especially nice mikoshi (Aug 3rd & 5th). Smaller mikoshi, carried only by children, come out on every day of the festival.

The highlight of the festival is the large tengu (long nosed goblin) masks that are carried by women to pray for the safety of their families. (They say that these really heavy masks are only carried by women, but the truth is that there are usually a number of men hidden in the inside ranks.) The tengu only come out on Aug. 3rd and 5th.

The sennin odori (thousand person dance) that takes place on the third is also quite interesting.

The usual variety of takoyaki and yakisoba festival street vendors can also be found lining the streets.

The main part of the festival takes place around the city hall and most of the festivities take place in the evening. Things are still going on even after the sun goes down.

Location Directions:

Numata - 沼田市

Location Description:

Numata is located in northern Gunma. It is bordered by Mt. Akagi and Mt. Hotaka. Being surrounded by mountains means that it gets a reprieve from the hellacious winds that can blow through the flatter parts of Gunma.

The kanji for Numata mean something along the lines of 'boggy field.' That doesn't conjure up the prettiest of pictures, but the Numata area is quite nice scenery-wise.

On the 13th of February, 2005, Numata merged with two smaller towns, Shirasawa Village and Tone Village (which have become Shirasawa-machi and Tone-machi, respectively). With these additions, Numata now stands at 443.37 square km, making it the largest city area-wise in Gunma, though of course, the neighboring town of Minakami is still larger.

Things in Numata

Numata Park (沼田公園 Numata Kouen)- Numata Park is located near the city hall. It has a playground and a large expanse of grass which is often used for picnicing in the cherry blossom season. There is also a small selection of caged animals, including bears and chickens. It's kind of sad. The park is also home to the Numata castle ruins as well as some relocated historical buildings.

Mt. Kasho (迦葉山 Kashozan) - The mountain is home to the Mirokuji Temple, a historical worshipping place for Buddhist monks. The temple houses a number of tengu (long-nosed red-faced goblin) masks including the largest Tengu mask in Japan, which stands 5.5 meters high and has a nose 2.7 meters long.

Fukiware Falls - 吹割の滝 (fukiware no taki)

Location Cost:
Free
Location Description:

Fukiware Falls is a waterfall in Numata-shi Tone-machi. The name means something akin to 'falls that split and blow.' The name comes from how the ground appears to be split and the sheets of spray that come from the falls.

There is lovely hiking right around and above the falls and it's also possible to walk right up to the edge of the falls. Be careful and stay behind the painted lines though as people have been washed over the edge by sudden rushes of water.
